Many people hear doctors say that they “trained in plastic surgery;” but are these doctors Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

For example, some dermatologists call themselves Mohs Surgeons or Dermatologic Surgeons and perform so-called "Plastic Surgery." They are moving skin, injecting fillers, and suctioning fat in their offices. They tell their patients that they know Plastic Surgery techniques. However, Plastic Surgery is not just a technique that one can read or see.

Plastic Surgery is a way of life. Plastic Surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery constantly critique their work; strive to improve results; and understand the subtleties of tissue. It is not just a matter of placing a flap in a tissue defect; but rather knowing how to finely tailor that flap along its blood supply and contour it into the defect.

Did you know that any doctor with a medical license can do any procedure in his or her office without supervision? This is one of the strange facts of the medical system in the United States.

Before you schedule your skin cancer excision with a dermatologist, ask him or her if they are going to request a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon close the resulting wound.
